Chapter Thirteen: Beat The Rev
Kevin raced to his living quarters, where Gulliver was waiting for him. With the help of his Servant, Kevin shed his Elite clothes and donned his Base brown outfit. Then he ran down to the gates of the Palace and hurried out into the streets of Aimsburg.
Kevin ran as fast as he could, looking like a streak of brown light to the people in the streets. His only thought was that Monica might be in danger: Monica might be in danger, Monica might be in danger! He had to reach her, he had to save her, he had to protect her from the Rev. And then, when she saw that he was a chivalrous, valiant knight riding to her aid, she would lose her fears and doubts and agree to be his forever. It would be brilliant: all Kevin had to do was to reach her in time.
The quality of the surroundings faded from bright red brick to dull gray stone; Kevin had entered the slums of Central Aimsburg, the district to the north of the Palace of the Elite. There were many Base walking up and down the streets, going about their daily business, but he ignored them. Finally, after running for ten minutes, Kevin reached Monica’s Residential. The building was a tall, chunky structure of brick and stone, lit by the sun high in the sky overhead. Kevin looked up and saw the window of Monica’s apartment: he thought he saw her through the window, although it was very high up and he couldn’t be sure. He was in time, he knew it: he was going to rescue her.
Just then there was a loud commotion behind Kevin, and the sound of something exploding. The Prince turned and stared in horror. His hopeful heart was swiftly wrapped by black tendrils of fear: he saw a group of eight young Elite men and women, led by Brent, Kevin’s hated rival among the young Elite nobility. They were plowing though the streets, murdering Base left and right and setting buildings on fire. The gang was an Urban Patrol, heading straight for Monica’s Residential, on a collision course with the woman he loved.
Monica was in her room, standing by the window and looking out onto the streets below. She recognized the Urban Patrol, the units of Elite who would go through the city, committing pointless murders and other atrocities to keep the Base afraid and hopeless. She saw that they were heading right for her. This was just fine, she thought: they would set the building on fire, and she would die in the flames, burning up like a phoenix, sent to the afterlife and free from the problem of her forbidden love. She would give up her earthly loves, and she would see Kevin again, in the Seven Heavens, and be with him for eternity. She stood at the window, waiting for death to take her.
Kevin wracked his mind, thinking frantically of some way to stop the Urban Patrol.
